"The Plainsman" - A Legendary Western
Anthony Quinn’s first speaking role was in the movie “The Plainsman” in 1936, portraying a Cheyenne Indian. This film was an historical Western directed by Cecil B. DeMille, starring Gary Cooper as Wild Bill Hickok and Jean Arthur in the role of Calamity Jane. The movie offered Quinn the opportunity to showcase his incredible versatility as an actor and set the stage for a stellar career ahead.
How He Got The Part
Quinn auditioned for his role in this Western when he was only 21 years old. Alerted by his best friend, whom he referred to as his “brother”, who saw a newspaper ad stating that DeMille was looking for Indians for his next movie, Quinn went to the studio, claiming he was Cheyenne. He misled the director, Cecil B. DeMille, who believed Quinn was an actual Native American, and that he could ride horses and speak Cheyenne. In fact, Quinn had never ridden a horse before and he only spoke pure gibberish in the film.
Initially offered $75 a day, Quinn's first scene involved riding a horse and approaching a fire. However, he decided to hide behind a tree for safety, frustrating DeMille. A heated exchange ensued, with Quinn asserting that the fire could reveal his presence to a potential enemy. Just then, Gary Cooper intervened, supporting Quinn's perspective, leading DeMille to revise the scene as a result. Watch the video below of Anthony recalling the story:
Acceptance speech of Cecil B. DeMille Award
In 1987, Anthony Quinn won the Cecil B. DeMille Award, an honorary Golden Globe Award bestowed by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) for "outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment". In his acceptance speech he recalled his first meeting with DeMille and how his participation in “The Plainsman” played a significant role in his prolific acting career.
